Story-open hooks for personal finance videos

A story open beats a statistic on money content, because a scene carries the feeling that the number only implies. Time, place, and one physical detail is all it takes.

  1. It was the 24th, I had 11 pounds, and a friend asked if I wanted to split a taxi.

    Why it works. The date, the balance and the small social trap. Everybody has been in that exact 4 seconds.

  2. The cash machine said 4.62 and I stood there reading it twice.

    Why it works. Reading it twice is the whole scene. Pence-level precision is what makes it a memory rather than an example.

  3. Picture a kitchen table, a shoebox of receipts, and a phone showing 2,400 owed.

    Why it works. Three objects, no adjectives. The viewer supplies the dread, which is stronger than being told about it.

  4. My card declined in a Sainsbury's queue behind 6 people and I said I forgot my wallet.

    Why it works. The lie at the end is the detail nobody admits, which is exactly why it stops the scroll.

  5. It was January the 3rd and I had already spent the money I budgeted for the month.

    Why it works. The third of January is funnier and worse than any later date, and it needs no explanation.

  6. The letter came on a Tuesday in a brown envelope and I left it unopened for 9 days.

    Why it works. Avoidance measured in days. The brown envelope does the emotional work without a word about money.

  7. I was 22, on 1,100 a month, and my landlord asked for 3 months up front.

    Why it works. Age, income, demand. Three numbers that together explain a whole year of somebody's life.

  8. The accountant put a single sheet on the table and pointed at the 2nd line from the bottom.

    Why it works. Withholds what the line said, which is the only thing the viewer now wants.

  9. It was 11pm and I was reading a pension statement for the first time in my adult life.

    Why it works. The hour makes it an impulse rather than a plan, which is how these things actually happen.

  10. My gran handed me 20 pounds in a card and told me exactly what to do with it.

    Why it works. Sets up an instruction the viewer now wants to hear, and the source makes it feel like inherited wisdom.
