Story-open hooks for business videos

A story open drops the viewer into a specific moment: a time, a place, an action. It works because a scene cannot be summarised, so leaving it means missing something rather than skipping a point.

  1. It was 4pm on a Friday and the biggest invoice of my year had just bounced back unpaid.

Why it works. Time, day and event in one line. The Friday is what makes it feel like a real afternoon rather than an anecdote.

  2. The office was empty, the kettle was still warm, and all 3 of my staff had left at lunch.

Why it works. The warm kettle is the detail that makes it a scene. Sensory specifics are what separate this from a summary.

  3. I was stood in a Lidl queue when my phone buzzed with an order for 11,000.

Why it works. The ordinary place against the extraordinary number. Contrast inside one sentence does the work of a whole setup.

  4. Picture a laptop on a kitchen table, 2 cold coffees, and a spreadsheet that would not balance.

Why it works. Three objects and no people. The viewer fills in the person, which is always themselves.

  5. 6am, the shop shutters halfway up, and a man already waiting with a box he wanted refunded.

Why it works. No verb in the first clause, which speeds it up, and the half-open shutter puts the viewer in the moment before the day starts.

  6. The meeting had 9 people in it and 8 of them were there because nobody cancelled it.

Why it works. A scene and a punchline at once. The near-identical numbers are what make the second clause land.

  7. I opened the till on a Monday and counted 4 pounds and 20 pence in it.

Why it works. Counting to the pence is the tell that this actually happened, and it sets a floor the rest of the story climbs from.

  8. My co-founder called at 2 in the morning, and she never calls at 2 in the morning.

Why it works. The repetition establishes the norm and breaks it in the same sentence, which is the cheapest way to create dread.

  9. There were 300 unsold units in a storage unit in Croydon and rent was due on Thursday.

Why it works. A count, a place and a deadline. Three specifics and the viewer already knows the stakes.

  10. A customer walked in 3 minutes before closing, and that sale paid the electricity for a month.

Why it works. Opens on a small moment and reveals the stakes in the second half, which is exactly where a viewer decides to stay.
