Confession hooks for personal finance videos

Money is the subject people lie about most, so an honest admission is worth more here than anywhere else. A confession earns the right to give advice in the same video.

1. I was wrong about debt. I paid the smallest one first and it worked better than the maths said.

   Why it works. Admits the method was irrational and that it still won, which is more useful than either side of the usual argument.

2. Nobody told me that 40,000 and no plan feels exactly like 24,000 and no plan.

   Copy

   Why it works. Two salaries, one feeling. It speaks to the viewer who got the pay rise and is confused that nothing changed.

3. I used to believe budgeting was for people with less money. I earned more and saved 0.

   Copy

   Why it works. The zero is what lands. A round, brutal number after a snobbish belief is a very short redemption arc.

4. I have never checked my pension. It has been 11 years and I am opening it on camera.

   Copy

   Why it works. Promises the moment of discovery inside the video, so leaving means missing the number.

5. I hid a 3,000 credit card from my partner for 8 months and the hiding was the expensive part.

   Copy

   Why it works. The reframe in the last clause turns a confession into an insight, which is what stops it being mere drama.

6. I was wrong about renting. I felt behind for 6 years for no reason anybody could explain.

   Copy

   Why it works. Names a shame the audience carries silently and refuses to justify it, which is a relief rather than advice.

7. I earned the most I have ever earned in 2023 and finished the year with less than I started.

   Copy

   Why it works. A paradox stated flatly. The viewer needs the explanation, and the year makes it a real accounting.

8. I used to move money into savings and quietly move it back on the 28th.

   Copy

   Why it works. 'Quietly' is doing all the work. Everybody who has done this knows the exact feeling of that transfer.

9. Nobody told me a pay rise of 4,000 would change my take-home by about 200 a month.

   Copy

   Why it works. Turns an abstract disappointment into arithmetic, and the arithmetic is the reason to watch.

10. I was wrong about investing. I waited until I understood everything and lost 5 years to reading.

    Why it works. The cost is measured in years rather than money, which is the more frightening and more accurate unit.
